PRESSURE RELIEF VALVES

A pressure relief valve (PRV) is a particular type of pressure relief safety valve used to control or limit the internal pressure within a system as pressure might otherwise elevate and create a process upset, instrument or even equipment failure. The pressure is relieved by permitting the pressurised fluid to flow from an auxiliary outlet out of the system. The relief valve is designed or set to open at a predetermined set pressure or otherwise known as the crack pressure to protect pressure vessels and other equipment from being subjected to pressures that exceed their design limits.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The primary purpose of a safety valve is the protection of life, property and of course, environment. A safety valve is designed to open and relieve excess internal pressures from vessels or equipment and to re-close and prevent the further release of fluid after normal operating conditions have been successfully restored.

A safety valve or pressure relief valve is a safety device and in many cases the last line of defence. It is important to ensure that the safety valve is capable to operate at all times and under all circumstances. A safety valve is not a process valve or pressure regulator and should not be misused as such an designed for over pressure protection.

FUNCTIONALITY

Pressure relief valves are generally operated via a helical mechanical spring which can be manually adjusted or via pilot operation which relies upon the systems medium to operate it.
